The Nut Job is a 2014 animated film directed by Peter Lepeniotis, based on his short film Surly Squirrel. Despite its poor reviews from critics, it was commercially successful because of a low budget and high box office revenue. A sequel came out in 2017, and a television series is reportedly in production.
Set in the 1950s in fictional Oakton City, the film centers on Surly the squirrel, known as a jerk who only looks out for himself. In an attempt to rob a nut cart, he accidentally causes the destruction of the park animals' food supply for winter, which gets him banished. When he and his partner Buddy find a nut shop, they plan a heist to get all the nuts inside, later agreeing to share with the other animals. However, the shop owners are planning to rob a bank and swap the money with those nuts.
Surly's drawn-out plan for robbing the cart ends with him and Buddy eating the nuts in the winter.
