Dragon Quest is a series of Japanese role-playing games created by Yuji Horii and published by Enix. The first installment was published in 1986 on the Famicom and many more main-series games have followed. The series is a phenomenon in Japan and served as the foundation for the modern JPRG. Numerous spin-offs have been made as well as manga, anime, and novel adaptations. Most of the series has been released outside of Japan except for Dragon Quest X, which has yet to see a localized release.

The series has little continuity and the location changes with each installment. Each game takes place in a medieval setting where the inhabitants speak a form of Early Modern English. The stories always focus on an unnamed hero who joins a group of party members to combat an evil enemy. The action plays out in turn-based combat and features recurring monsters such as the Slime, Chimaera or Golem. All of the monster animations are highly exaggerated, especially the breath attacks that are found throughout the series.

Dragon Quest IV

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen is the fourth mainline title in the series. It was originally released in 1990 for the Famicom in Japan, before being localized in America in 1992. It received an updated re-release on the PlayStation in 2001, and the Nintendo DS in 2007. In 2014, Android and iOS versions were released as well.

Dragon Quest V

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is the fifth main entry in the series. It was originally released for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1992, and remade for the PlayStation 2 in 2004. It was also remade for the Nintendo DS in 2008, making it the first time the game was released in America. Android and iOS versions followed in 2014.

Dragon Quest VI

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation was originally released for the Super Famicom in 1995, and remade for the Nintendo DS in 2010, which was also released in America. Android and iOS versions were released in 2015.

Dragon Quest VII

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is the seventh mainline entry in the series. It was originally released for the PlayStation in 2000, and remade for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. Android and iOS versions were released in 2015.

These monsters were found in the 3DS remake and original PSX release.
