It is an anthology series set in a modern society of anthropomorphic animals. '''Beast Complex''' was created by Itagki Paru in 2016 as her debut manga which would establish the setting for her later work, Beastars. The setting consists of a modern society of anthropomorphic animals that divides animals into predators and prey. Each chapter focuses on two individual animals and how they interact with each other often with their species often, but not always, being a focal point. The chapter tends to vary wildly from one another in both plot and seriousness.

Itagki would reference Beastars in Beast Complex after she created that series. Legoshi would begin to appear as a recurring background character despite the nature of the manga and Itagki would eventually start to create Beastar-related chapters. So far, only three Beastar chapters have been made with the first two being based on Legoshi's relationships and the third Beastar being about Airdo and Ako's relationship.

==Chapter 9, "The Shiba Inu and The Shiba Inu"==

The chapter starts with three men admiring an original photo of the then-27 "Mugi-chan" while complimenting how she gets cuter every year. The next scene shows the now portly, and 39, Mugi surrounded by junk food in his apartment. A later flashback shows a thinner Mugi when he first modeled and the last page again shows Mugi's extra weight without his jacket hiding it.
