Wikipedia

Sandman Mystery Theatre was a 1993 Vertigo series and re-imagining of the early DC hero The Sandman, setting his exploits in a period-accurate 1938 New York that frequently and explicitly dealt with the racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism of the time, as well as graphic themes that the original comics did and could not. Quiet and withdrawn industrial heir Wesley Dodds, haunted by insomnia and "dark dreams" of his father dying in the Great War, dons the mask he sees in his nightmares to become a crusading vigilante with a sedative-gas gun, often aided by his lover, the district attorney's daughter Dian Belmont.

The Crone, Act Three of Four (Issue #55, October 1997)

Disturbed by the nature of the Crone murders and having learned she is pregnant, Dian has an abstract nightmare about an old woman gorging herself on books to "birth" a Bible.
