CRACKED Magazine
CRACKED Magazine (also known as CRACKED) was an American humor magazine founded in 1957 by Sol Brodsky. The longest-running of MAD's imitators, CRACKED deliberately copied its more famous rival as closely as it could in terms of layout, content, and presentation -- recruiting past MAD artists as regulars (Severin, Martin) and occasional contributors (Davis, Elder, Wolverton), and hiring creators who could passably imitate MAD regulars' art styles or features. As a result, the magazine was successful, but often derided as an inferior substitute.
Ending in a similar fashion to MAD, it sustained itself in later years through continually reprinting material, suffered a decline in readership by the 2000's, and was cancelled shortly after a high-profile relaunch failed to meet expectations (though CRACKED's new format was more offensive and closer to "men's magazines" like Maxim and FHM). It is survived today by its online outlet, which now operates as an independent humor site.
