Mazie was a series of comics first created in 1950 as an attempt by Nation-Wide Publishing to profit off the era's teen-humor boom; it would later be retooled with new characters in 1952 to adhere to the formula set by Archie more closely. The stories involve teenager Mazie Dean getting into humorous antics along with her boyfriend Stevie, French romantic rival Jeanie, and friends Mortie, Laura and Flat-Top. Heavy emphasis was placed on dialogue filled with puns and wordplay.
Spin-offs featuring Flat-Top, Mortie, and Stevie followed, but were not successful. After Nation-Wide dissolved in 1954, Harvey bought up the rights and "continued" the main series for another year, packaging collections of reprinted stories as new.

Mortie briefly appears stuffed after eating lunch at Poppa Joe's, though it is not drawn attention to.
