Yume Penguin Monogatari (often referred to in English as Dream Penguin Adventure) is a 1991 game by Konami. It stars Penta the penguin, who previously starred in Antarctic Adventure and Penguin Adventure, on his quest to lose weight and impress Penko.

Story

Penta has developed an addiction to food, prompting his girlfriend Penko to threaten leaving him unless he loses weight. His rival, a gang leader called Genji, wants Penko for himself and tempts Penta with slimming drinks, while ordering his gang to fatten him up.

Gameplay

In each level, Penko sets a time limit in which the stage must be cleared. Penta must avoid apples and rice cakes thrown by enemies, which will cause him to gain weight, and collect slimming drinks until he reaches Penko's expectations.

Penta's fat form moves slowly, but has a belly flop attack that can crush enemies.

Penta's normal chubby form is faster and has a close range kick attack.

Penta's slim form gains a projectile peep attack.

In flight stages, Penta's weight is only represented by two sprite variants - normal and fat. His weight has no effect on the gameplay when airborne.

Falling in water on platform stages, or directly colliding with an enemy or obstacle in flight stages, will cause Penta to inflate and float upwards. This instantly increases the weight meter by a large amount.

Penta cannot die, and stages are instead failed if the time runs out, or Penta reaches the exit at the wrong weight. In both scenarios Penko will give an angry phone call where she breaks up with him, prompting a continue screen.

As the levels progress, Penko's standards go up, and Penta must lose further weight each time to clear the stage successfully.

Endings

Completing the final boss without meeting Penta's standards will trigger the bad ending, where Penko leaves the chubby penguin for her kidnapper, Genji. Like any other game over scenario, the stage can be replayed from the continue screen.

In the good ending, Penko congratulates Penta, rewarding him with a kiss. She then spends the entire credit sequence eating, eventually gaining a large amount of weight and startling Penta. On the first playthrough, she will make him do a second lap, which causes the stages to repeat.
