Super Mario is a series of platformer video games developed by Nintendo and created by Shigeru Miyamoto. Taking place in the Mushroom Kingdom and starring Nintendo's mascot, Mario, the games usually tell the story of Mario rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser, along with the help of his many friends.

Super Mario World

Super-mario-world-1.jpg

Super Mario World is a 2D platforming game originally released in November 1990 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was later re-released alongside Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES, and it eventually received an updated port on the Game Boy Advance titled Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, which added more content.

This game introduces the P-Balloon (or the Power Balloon), which causes Mario to inflate and float around in any direction for a limited amount of time. Balloon Mario's sprite coincides with the form he had prior to obtaining the P-Balloon.

The P-Balloon can be found in the following levels: "Donut Secret 1", "Donut Secret 2", "Forest of Illusion 1", and "Tubular".

Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS

SuperMario64-Boxart.png

Super Mario 64 is a game released in June 1996 on the Nintendo 64 that severed as the series' first fully 3D platforming video game. When Bowser takes over Princess Peach's castle, Mario must defeat him by collecting Power Stars hidden in various worlds through the castle's paintings.

In the third mission of Cool, Cool Mountain, "Big Penguin Race", Mario can win a Power Star by beating the Big Penguin in a race to the bottom of the secret slide area. Returning to this mission after collecting all 120 Power Stars shows that the Big Penguin has gotten larger; having put on weight from being out of practice, which makes racing down the slide again far more challenging.

A remake titled Super Mario 64 DS was released on the Nintendo DS eight years later in November 2004, which added Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi as playable characters as well as new areas, challenges, and mini-games.

The Big Penguin returns in the exact same role from the original Super Mario 64, only now becoming wider after all 150 of this game's Power Stars have been collected.

The Power Flower is a new item that replaces the Metal Cap and Vanishing Cap power-ups from the original game, which grants new powers depending on the character that uses it. When Mario uses the Power Flower, he inflates with air, allowing him to float anywhere similar to Balloon Mario from Super Mario World.

Super Mario Sunshine

Super mario sunshine.jpg

Super Mario Sunshine is a 3D platforming game released in July 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube. In this game, Mario and Princess Peach take a tropical vacation to Isle Delfino. Upon arriving, Mario is wrongly accused of polluting the island with hazardous graffiti and sentenced to clean up the mess. With help from a water pump device named F.L.U.D.D., Mario cleans the goop, gathers Shine Sprites, and seeks to clear his name.

In Bianco Hills, the Piranha Plant enemies can be inflated by using F.L.U.D.D. to fill them with water.

In the second episode of Bianco Hills, "Down with Petey Pirahna!", when fighting Petey Piranha, Mario must shoot water into his open mouth to similarly fill him up. Petey will eventually become bloated and fall over, giving Mario a chance to attack by ground-pounding his exposed navel.

Petey Piranha returns in Episode 5 of Bianco Hills, "Petey Piranha Strikes Back".

Poinks are pig-like creatures that only appear in Episode 5 of Bianco Hills, and during the boss battle with King Boo in Episode 5 of Sirena Beach. When approached, a Poink will attach itself to F.L.U.D.D.'s nozzle. Squirting water causes the Poink to expand and this can then be fired off from the nozzle as a projectile.

New Super Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros. is a 2D platforming game released in May 2006 for the Nintendo DS. Returning to the classic formula of side-scrolling gameplay seen in the original Super Mario titles, Mario must once again travel across various levels to rescue Princess Peach.

A rare enemy called a Balloon Boo appears in World 4-Ghost House. When Mario looks at the Balloon Boo, it will inflate itself to a larger size by filling up with air. When Mario looks away, the Balloon Boo will follow Mario, deflating itself as it moves.

Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy is a 3D platforming game released in November 2007 for the Nintendo Wii. During the Star Festival, Bowser's forces attack and capture Princess Peach's castle with plans of universal domination. With help from a mysterious princess named Rosalina and the star-like Lumas she looks after, Mario sets out to retrieve Power Stars in order to reach the center of the universe where Bowser has taken Princess Peach.

In the game are Hungry Lumas, a type of Luma that will ask to be fed a certain number of Star Bits. Feeding them enough Star Bits makes them transform into planets and galaxies.

Another Hungry Luma named Lumalee usually appears before boss battles. In exchange for 30 Star Bits, Lumalee will turn into either a Life Mushroom or a 1-Up Mushroom for Mario to use.

There is also a Hungry Luma in the Comet Observatory that will help move Prankster Comets away from galaxies for 20 Star Bits.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a 3D platforming game released in May 2010 for the Nintendo Wii. It is a direct sequel to Super Mario Galaxy that retains many gameplay elements from its predecessor and also introduces new ones, such as the ability to ride Yoshi. Similar to the first game, Mario must travel across the universe aboard Starship Mario with the help of a Luma named Lubba to collect Power Stars and stop Bowser's plan to once again conquer the universe.

Hungry Lumas return from the previous game serving the same function, with some that also eat coins instead of Star Bits.

Lumalee also returns with the same function as before.

Lumalee also appears inside Starship Mario and can turn into Chance Cubes when fed coins or Star Bits.

By eating a Blimp Fruit, Yoshi becomes Blimp Yoshi, which makes him temporarily inflate and float up to higher places. The Blimp Fruit appears in the Tall Trunk Galaxy, Starshine Beach Galaxy, Flash Black Galaxy, and Bowser's Galaxy Generator.

New Super Mario Bros. U

New Super Mario Bros. U is 2D platforming game released in November 2012 for the Nintendo Wii U. Similar to its predecessor, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, up to four players can team up in a side-scrolling adventure across the Mushroom Kingdom with new levels and power-ups. A re-release with additional features for the Nintendo Switch was released in January 2019 as New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

Balloon Baby Yoshi is one of the three baby Yoshis that can be found at certain points in the game. If the player carries Balloon Baby Yoshi, they can glide through the air by using its ability to inflate. Balloon Baby Yoshi can re-inflate up to seven consecutive times before the player touches the ground again.

Super Mario Maker

Super Mario Maker is a game creator application released in September 2015 for the Nintendo Wii U which allows players to create, share, and play their own custom-made 2D Super Mario levels. It received a port for the Nintendo 3DS in December 2016, known as Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS.

When given a Super Mushroom, a Hammer Bro transforms into its fatter variant, the Sledge Bro.

Super Mario Maker 2

Super Mario Maker 2 is a direct sequel to Super Mario Maker released in June 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. Like its predecessor, the game allows players to build and play their own "Super Mario" levels with the addition of new gameplay elements and characters.

Like in the first Super Mario Maker, the player can turn Hammer Bros into Sledge Bros by making them larger. In the Super Mario 3D World game style, the player can also similarly turn Fire Bros into a new type of enemy called Heavy Fire Bros.

The Porcupuffer enemy appears exclusively in the Super Mario 3D World game style. When placed in water, the Porcupuffer can be attacked with fireballs, with each hit inflating it slightly. Upon the fourth hit, the Porcupuffer will burst like a balloon. The Porcupuffer can also fully swallow the player, similarly to the Boss Bass enemy from Super Mario Bros. 3.

The P-Balloon power-up from Super Mario World was added in the Version 3.0.0 content update released in April 2020, which can only be used in the Super Mario World game style. Unlike its original appearance, Balloon Mario is now its own specific power-up form and the player now has greater control over the character's movement.

In the Ninji Speedrun mode, the Ninji ghosts can also use P-Balloons, gaining a unique inflated sprite when they do so.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a 2D platforming game released in October 2023 for the Nintendo Switch. Mario and friends help Prince Florian of the neighboring Flower Kingdom by collecting Wonder Seeds to stop yet another takeover from Bowser. One of the game's new features is a special item called the Wonder Flower, which triggers a strange phenomenon called a Wonder Effect on the area around it or the characters that collect it.

The Wonder Effect in the level "Bloomps of the Desert Skies" changes all the playable characters into balloon forms similar to Balloon Mario from Super Mario World and Super Mario Maker 2.
